Private-label cat litter is a great business โ margins are healthy and demand is structural. But the factory you pick determines your quality, your lead times, and whether you can differentiate. Here are the six questions we wish every buyer asked upfront.
1. What is your real production capacity?
A trading company and a factory are not the same thing. Ask for annual tonnage and how many production lines run. Shanghai Yiyue operates its own facility with 10,000+ tons of annual capacity across tofu, cassava and bentonite lines โ so volume and consistency are not a bottleneck.
2. Which certifications do you actually hold?
For EU, North America and Australia, certifications are table stakes. Confirm SGS testing, CE, and BSCI social-compliance where relevant, and ask for the actual documents โ not just a claim on a website. (Our facility holds SGS, CE and BSCI; request the latest reports via our contact page โ.)
3. How deep is formula customization?
"OEM" can mean "put your logo on my stock product" or "we build the formula with you." If you want to differentiate, confirm the factory can adjust clumping speed, dust level, scent, particle size, and blend ratios (e.g. tofu + bentonite). True ODM capability is rarer than ODM labelling.
4. What is the real MOQ?
Minimum order quantity drives your cash flow. MOQ varies sharply by product (tofu vs bentonite vs a custom blend) and by packaging (bulk bag vs branded retail box). Get the number per SKU in writing before you plan your first container.
5. What is the realistic lead time?
From order confirmation to FOB port, lead time depends on formula complexity and whether packaging is custom-printed. Build buffer into your reorder cycle โ and confirm the factory communicates delays proactively rather than silently.
6. Do you have R&D and sampling?
The best private-label relationships are developmental. Can they ship you physical samples fast, iterate on a formula, and support new-product launches? A factory with an in-house lab shortens your time-to-market dramatically.
Red flags to watch
- Reluctance to share certification documents
- Vague answers on capacity or lead time
- No physical sample program
- Pricing that swings with no formula justification
